Come and join our team! A job opportunity for a Community Engagement and Events Co-ordinator has arisen

Who are we?

The Town Mill in Lyme Regis is one of Lyme’s leading tourist attractions and is run as a Charitable Trust. It is a unique mix of a working watermill, an art gallery and a range of creative artisans and businesses for whom The Town Mill is home. Our mission is to be a vibrant historic and cultural centre in the heart of Lyme Regis with broad appeal for everyone.

Who are we looking for?

To support The Town Mill in the next phase of its development, an exciting, paid, part-time opportunity to join the trust in its beautiful location has arisen.

The Town Mill Trust is looking to appoint a Community Engagement and Events Co-ordinator to join its small employed team who oversee day-to-day operations.

This role has received funding so is initially available on a fixed 3 year term contract.

The Community Engagement & Events Co-ordinator will oversee the development and execution of our plans to broaden the range of visitors who can benefit from The Town Mill heritage site, with "community" being at the core.

The first steps to increasing engagement are already underway with access to The Town Mill now being on a free, self-guided basis. We are now specifically looking to expand the site's use by community, hard-to-reach and disadvantaged groups who could learn / benefit / enjoy all this this centrally located historical site has to offer.

This role is available for 12 hours a week and the Trust would be willing to consider a number of working patterns for the right candidate, however, there is a requirement for core hours to be worked on site and the role would not be suitable for someone who would prefer a work-from-home arrangement.

What are the key aspects of the role?

The key elements of this role include :

  • Engage and build relationships with both community groups and other organisations to identify opportunities

  • To work towards creating a programme of events and activities based on the needs of visiting groups

  • To develop learning and/or experience initiatives to encourage disadvantaged and hard to reach groups as well as schools and local "non-visitors" to benefit from visiting and enjoying this historical site.

  • Co-ordinate and arrange visits / events and manage groups whilst on site, including preparation of resources.

  • Plan and implement appropriate marketing and communications to support the development of a "community and events" programme

  • Effectively manage the budget associated with the role

  • To be able to work "flexibly." Flexibly in this context means the ability to sometimes vary your usual weekly work schedule to oversee events and visiting groups.

What are the skills needed for this role?

This is an outwards-looking role and the Trust believes that the right candidate will be someone with strong communication skills (both face-to-face and in writing) as well as the highly developed soft skills and empathy with people that is at the core of relationship-building.

Experience of community engagement, learning / visitor experience or event management would be desirable but we do expect the suitable candidate will be:

  • Well organized

  • Creative and compassionate

  • Highly computer literate

  • An outwards-looking self-starter

  • Have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to engage and influence
